Me
Originally from Cádiz, Andalusia, and based in Scotland since 2002, I am a multidisciplinary musician, flamenco artist, educator, artistic director and art historian whose work brings together performance, education, cultural heritage and creative innovation.
Ironically, although I was born in one of flamenco’s most authentic heartlands, it was not the music that first captured my attention. From an early age I was surrounded by a rich musical environment and began studying at the conservatoire as a child. An injury prevented me from continuing my formal instrumental training, but it never interrupted what became my greatest education: listening. Years of absorbing music from many traditions shaped my ear long before I ever stepped onto a stage.
It was only after moving to Scotland that flamenco truly became part of my identity. Living away from Andalusia gave me a new perspective on my own culture, and flamenco gradually became my language of expression—a way of understanding who I was, remaining connected to my roots, and communicating with audiences from completely different backgrounds. It became not only my artistic home but also the foundation from which I could explore many other musical traditions.
Determined to deepen my knowledge, I trained extensively in flamenco singing, guitar, rhythm and compás, combining my life in Scotland with regular periods of study in Spain under respected artists and teachers. Throughout this journey I have always sought a balance between the authenticity of traditional flamenco and the creative possibilities that emerge when it meets other musical languages. My collaborations have included flamenco, Latin music, jazz, folk and world music, always with profound respect for the essence of the art.
For more than two decades I have performed throughout the United Kingdom in theatres, festivals, concert halls and cultural venues. Since 2006 I have appeared every year at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, presenting productions ranging from traditional flamenco performances to large-scale multidisciplinary collaborations.
I currently perform as one of the lead singers with the Daniel Martínez Flamenco Company, touring acclaimed productions including Art of Believing and Andalucía. Throughout my career I have collaborated with numerous companies and productions, including Alba Flamenca, India Flamenco, Mosaico Flamenco, Orkesta Simbolika, Rumba Mágica, Dondeduendes and many other artistic collaborations that have helped shape my musical journey.
In 2018 I co-founded TuFlamenco, a company dedicated to producing professional flamenco performances while making the art form accessible through education. Since then we have created productions including Flamenco Tablao, Flamenconova, From India to Triana and Flamenco in Scotland, alongside a year-round programme of classes, workshops and cultural activities throughout Scotland and online.
Education has always been as important to me as performance. For many years I have designed and delivered workshops in flamenco, rhythm, body percussion, singing, guitar and movement for schools, universities, hospitals, festivals and community organisations. My work has involved participants of all ages and backgrounds, including people with physical disabilities, learning disabilities and mental health challenges. I believe music should be both artistically rigorous and genuinely accessible, capable of building confidence, communication and human connection.
Alongside my professional artistic career, I hold a Master’s Degree in Flamencology and have an academic background in Art History. These studies have strengthened my commitment to understanding flamenco not only as a performing art but also as an important cultural and historical heritage.
More recently, my interests have expanded into music technology, live sound engineering and innovative performance systems. I enjoy exploring how traditional acoustic performance can coexist with modern technology, designing live productions that combine authenticity with new creative possibilities while always placing musical expression at the centre.
For me, flamenco is not simply a genre of music. It is a way of listening, communicating and understanding emotion. It is tradition and evolution existing side by side. Whether performing on stage, teaching in a classroom or collaborating across artistic disciplines, my aim remains the same: to create meaningful experiences that connect people through music.
Fragments from reviews
“(…) Danielo and Inma are gifted singers with amazing range. Their intense love for all things flamenco is confirmed by the conviction with which they sing. (…) adding complex beats to the ladies’ rhythmic clapping. I would have preferred more focus on the guitar personally, as the sporadic solos hinted at Dani’s extraordinary expertise. (…)”
“(…) The rich earthy voice of INMA MONTERO evokes a feeling of yearning and inherited sadness. (…) DANIELO OLIVERA is the male singer within the group. Within his voice is an intense, desire and longing that touches the audience. (…)”
“(…) GABRIELA POUSO her dancing is proud, regal and fiery. She dances with the confidence, her feet getting faster and faster revving up the audience who cannot believe the speed. She teases the audience with gentle and sensual movement of her hips and her flashing dark eyes, then she winks and sits down. This is Flamenco. (…)”
“(…) If performance is therapy, then this was a group session. Leading us through the emotional gymnastics was singer and dancer Danielo Olivera, carefully explaining the meaning behind each song before launching into a cathartic wailed melody. (…)”
“(…) and Edinburgh’s very own celebrated flamenco singer Danielo Olivera make for a show that is truly sensational! Technically astonishing performances illustrate a profound understanding of traditional flamenco flirting with the seductive flavours of jazz. A fusion that keeps flamenco music spirited and alive from start to finish! (…)”
“(…) Cadiz-born performer Danielo Olivera gives Rumba Magica its musical soul. Few explanations are provided for the lyrics to the songs but Olivera sings them with such heart, agility and a wonderful sandpapery tone that he could invest a reading from a bus ticket with a world of hurt, joy and celebration. (…)”
“(…) Aided and abetted by the wild singing of Cadiz-born Danielo Olivera and cajon percussion from Madrid David Montes, they bring the fire of the gypsy to the north with passion and gusto. (…)”
“(…) Danielo Olivera croons intensely, building the show to a melodramatic climax and witty encore. (…)”
“(…) an interactive evening which guides the audience through several different styles of Flamenco including alegrías, soleá, bulerías and tarantas. It is hosted by the charismatic Danielo Olivera who introduces each song with an explanation for us British folk which is detailed enough to be informative and brief enough to maintain the charismatic elusiveness that defines the world of Flamenco. (…)”
“(…) The guitarist (Andrew Robinson) gave a breathtakingly creative and technically excellent performance frequently stunning the audience into open-mouthed wonder. The host and singer (Olivera) was similarly accomplished, portraying (in a way only a flamenco singer can) the depths and heights of the human soul. His inclusive and friendly demeanour also allowed the audience access to what can sometimes be a very exclusive genre; the grating gitano emotion, so far from a British mentality, was not intimidating but liberating. (…)”
“(…) Danielo Olivera’s expressive, evocative vocals convey the narrative of passion hanging in the air as Mayte Beltran’s liquid arms twist above an athletic core. (…)”
“(…) Each of them, alone incredible, together a fusion of perfection. (…)”
